Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Greuther Fürth: Final score 1-1, Fürth miss chance to steal three points

Eintracht Frankfurt will be disappointed after a 1-1 draw with bottom of the table Greuther Fürth on Friday evening.

The hosts wasted no time scoring the first goal of the match. Alexander Meier pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area and shot into the far corner past Max Grün to make it 1-0 Frankfurt after 21 seconds.

Olivier Occean nearly made it 2-0 35 minutes into the match, but Grün made a great save on an outstanding attempt from the Canadian international. Frankfurt wasn’t able to capitalize any further in the half as Fürth tightened up in the midfield and made the contest a true battle between the penalty areas.

Fürth began to push out from the back acquiring chances in the later stages of the first half and the beginning of the second. Their equalizer came in the 53rd minute. Zoltan Stieber was played in behind the Frankfurt backline by Edgar Prib. Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp came out to cut him off, but Stieber chipped the ball perfectly over him and into the back of the net.

Gerald Asamoah had the opportunity to give the visitors a lead five minutes later, but Trapp made a fantastic save to tip the bar over the crossbar. Fürth had by far the better opportunities throughout the second half with all three points on the table for taking, but they were unable to capitalize on any of the opportunities. The blame will lay squarely at their feet. Their inability to finish their chances cost them three points today.

Frankfurt move level on points with second place Schalke, but sit in third on goal differential. The point temporarily left Fürth off the table’s bottom ahead of Augsburg.
