Rafael Benitez confirmed as new Chelsea manager

Rafael Benitez has been unveiled as the new manager of Chelsea, the club have confirmed.

In a statement on their website, Chelsea have confirmed that Rafael Benitez is their new manager until the end of the season.

The former Liverpool boss will take over from the departing Roberto Di Matteo, who was sacked after Chelsea faced going out of the Champions League at the group stages.

The statement declared: “Chelsea Football Club can confirm Rafael Benitez has been appointed interim first-team manager until the end of the season.

The owner and the Board believe that in Benitez we have a manager with significant experience at the highest level of football, who can come in and immediately help deliver our objectives.”

Benitez had been heavily linked with the job in the press, but the surprise is that he has only been given a contract until the end of the season. His first game in charge will not be an easy one as Chelsea face Manchester City at the weekend.

Benitez will meet his new squad at the Cobham training ground tomorrow. He may hope it lasts longer than his tenure at the last Champions League holders he took over, but it seems even winning that trophy isn’t enough to keep your job at Chelsea.
