Bayer Leverkusen jumped ahead of Borussia Dortmund into fourth place with a win over Fortuna Düsseldorf.

Bayer Leverkusen moved into fourth place in the Bundesliga with a 3-2 victory over Fortuna Düsseldorf. Leverkusen extended their unbeaten run to seven matches while Düsseldorf have now lost four in a row.

Leverkusen struck first through Sidney Sam in the 16th minute. Stefan Kießling held the ball up top before feeding a streaking Sam who deftly chipped the ball over Fabian Giefer for the 1-0 lead. The goal is Sam’s fourth on the season.

The equalizer came in the 40th minute off the head of Nando Rafael. Axel Bellinghausen’s corner was headed by Rafael, and the ball took a slight deflection before beating Michael Rensing. Leverkusen restored their lead just a minute later. Sam’s low hard close was blocked by Tobias Levels, but Andre Schürrle was right behind him to blast it into the net for the halftime lead.

After Simon Rolfes came on the pitch and was then red-carded within two minutes for a dangerous tackle, 10 man Leverkusen retook the lead in the 66th minute. Daniel Carvajal beat the Düsseldorf defense to the ball before squaring the ball to Gonzalo Castro who punched it in the net for the 3-1 lead.

Düsseldorf would grab a consolation goal from Adam Bodzek, but they were unable to find another equalizer even after bombarding the Leverkusen goal with shots for the last few minutes.
