Aaron Hunt scored twice, including the winner in the 85th minute, to lead Werder Bremen past Mainz 2-1 on Sunday. Bremen leapfrogged Mainz into 7th place in the table, but both clubs are level on points.

Bremen took the lead on 11 minutes when Nils Petersen squared the ball to Hunt. The midfielder put his shot into the corner out of the reach of a diving Christian Wetklo to make it 1-0. Eljero Elia nearly made it 2-0 a few minutes later, but his shot struck the goalpost.

Mainz grabbed an equalizer in the 64th minute from Adam Szalai. Radoslav Zabavnik sent in a cross, and Szalai headed it past Sebastian Mielitz to make it 1-1. The goal is Szalai’s fifth goal in his last three matches.

Both sides began pushing for a winner, but Bremen would be the one to find it. Hunt stepped up in the 85th minute and smacked a free kick past Wetklo for the winner.
