Borussia Dortmund vs. Hannover, 2012 DFB Pokal: Final score 5-1, BVB thrash Hannover

Borussia Dortmund smashed Hannover 5-1 in the third round of the DFB Pokal on Wednesday.

Borussia Dortmund thrashed Hannover 5-1 to move on to the quarterfinals of the DFB Pokal. The win was important for BVB as Hannover were their “bogey team”, having knocked them out of the competition in four previous matchups.

BVB scored after only three minutes. Kevin Großkreutz, starting at right back for the sick Marcel Schmelzer, headed the ball across the goal to Mario Götze. He knocked it in unmarked for the 1-0 lead.

Things wouldn't get easier for Hannover, and BVB pushed for more goals. Marco Reus played Jakub Blaszczykowski through the middle, and he scored to make it 2-0 after 18 minutes. In the 40th minute, Steve Cherundolo was called for a foul just on top of the box for a foul on Marco Reus. Götze sent his free kick low under the wall, and it went past Ron-Robert Zieler for the 3-0 halftime lead.

After 35 minutes of nearly no action, the second half exploded into a goalfest. Szabolcs Huszti sent in a perfect cross to Mame Biram Diouf, and the Senegal international smashed his header past Roman Weidenfeller to pull one back for Hannover.

Götze finished the first hat trick of his career five minutes later, and Robert Lewandowski added one in the dying minutes to make it 5-1. It was an ugly day for Hannover.
