When Mauricio Pellegrino was axed from his post at Valencia following his team's loss to Real Sociedad, most expected former Valencia manager Unai Emery to return to the Mestalla. He departed for Russia during the summer, but was recently sacked after a tough start to the season. Instead, the Valencia board have chosen to move in a new direction, appointing Ernesto Valverde as their new coach.

Instead of bringing back Unai Emery to manage the club, Valencia have opted to go in a new direction.

Valverde made his name in management with Athletic Bilbao, where he was an assistant and reserve team manager before taking over the full team. They qualified for the UEFA Cup under his management before he headed to Espanyol, who he guided to the UEFA Cup final.
In between successful stints at Olympiakos, Valverde had one unsuccessful spell at Villarreal, who sacked him in 2010 after just half a year in charge. He experienced success in his second stint at Olympiakos, winning the Greek Superleague title.
While Valverde’s teams have been more defensively disciplined and perhaps slightly more rigid in style than Emery or Pellegrino’s, don’t expect Los Che to undergo a serious stylistic change under Valverde. Valencia are a talented team who is currently underachieving that is simply in need of a bit of stability and organization, and Valverde should provide that.
