Europa League preview: Liverpool and Tottenham lead list of those through to knockouts

Who qualified for the knockout rounds in the Europa League? Find out here.

Richard Heathcote

Group A

Udinese vs. Liverpool, Young Boys vs. Anzhi Makhachkala

This one is slightly complicated, so pay attention. Udinese are already out, and Anzhi are already through, so Liverpool and Young Boys will be fighting it out for the 2nd qualification place. Liverpool have the better head-to-head record, so if they equal or better Young Boys’ result against Udinese, the will go through. The one exception to that is if Liverpool lose, in which case they will definitely be out, since if Young Boys also lose, it will be a three-way tie, where Young Boys’ record is better. Simple.

Group B

Victoria Plzen vs. Atletico Madrid, Hapoel Tel Aviv vs. Academica

This group is already decided in terms of qualification places, with Plzen and Atleti already through. They’ll face off for the top spot, where the Czechs will need a win in order to finish first.

Group C

Fenerbahce vs. Borussia Monchengladbach, AEL vs. Olympique Marseille

Everything in this group is done and dusted - Fenerbahce are top, Monchengladbach second, Marseille third and AEL fourth, no matter what happens. Two dead rubbers - avoid.

Group D

Bordeaux vs. Newcastle, Maritimo vs. Club Brugge

The qualification in this group is all decided, with Bordeaux and Newcastle both through, but they’ll be fighting for top spot, which the Magpies can claim with a win.

Group E

FC Copenhagen vs. Steaua Bucharest, Stuttgart vs. Molde

Here’s where it gets really complicated. Of the three teams that can qualify: Steaua are top of the group, and can qualify with a win, draw, or if they only lose 1-0. If they lose by any other scoreline and Stuttgart win, they’re done for. Stuttgart just need to win or hope Copenhagen don’t. Copenhagen need to win 1-0 or by two goals. If they win by any other margin, they need to hope Stuttgart don’t win. If they don’t win, they’re out. It’s all very simple, honest.

Group F

Napoli vs. PSV, Dnipro vs. AIK

Both the qualification places are decided , with Napoli and Dnipro both cruising into the next round. Nothing to see here, people.

Group G

Genk vs. Basel, Sporting CP vs. Videoton

This group is close to being decided, but not quite. Genk are top and qualified, and can seal first place with a draw, but Basel will want a win to ensure their progress. If they lose and Videoton win, they’ll be heading out in place of the Hungarians.

Group H

Internazionale vs. Neftci, Partizan vs. Rubin Kazan

The qualification places are decided, with Inter and Rubin going through by miles and first place already going to the Russians. The only thing to be decided here is 3rd and 4th, which is completely meaningless.

Group I

Athletic Bilbao vs. Sparta Prague, Lyon vs. Hapoel Kiryat Shmona

Once again, everything important is decided: Lyon win the group, Sparta go through, and Athletic and Kiryat Shmona are out. Done and dusted.

Group J

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Panathinaikos, Maribor vs. Lazio

There’s something to play for here: Tottenham can secure qualification with a draw against Panathinaikos, but will go out should they lose to the Greeks. Lazio are qualified no matter what, but should they draw or lose and Tottenham win, the Lilywhites will steal first place. Maribor are out no matter what.

Group K

Bayer Leverkusen vs. Rosenborg, Rapid Vienna vs. Metalist

This group is all decided: Metalist finish first, Leverkusen second, and Rosenborg and pointless Rapid Vienna are out in 3rd and 4th respectively.

Group L

FC Twente vs. Helsingborg, Levante vs. Hannover

The qualification places are decided with Levante and Hannover going through, but the Spaniards can seal top spot with a home win. A draw will be enough for Hannover to take first.
