Wolverhampton Wanderers were above the relegation zone in the English Premier League entering the last round of fixtures, but now find themselves in 18th position. That is the result of their worst defeat of the season, a 5-1 drubbing at the hands of local rivals West Bromwich Albion. Following that terrible performance, in which Wolves were lucky to be tied at halftime and conceded four in the second half, manager Mick McCarthy has been sacked by the club.
Mick McCarthy Sacked By Wolverhampton Wanderers
Wolverhampton Wanderers have sacked manager Mick McCarthy after an embarrassing 5-1 defeat at the hands of local rivals West Bromwich Albion.
McCarthy took over at Wolves in 2006 and eventually guided the team to promotion in the Premier League. He kept the team in the Premier League over the last two seasons -- albeit, on a last-minute miracle last season -- but his team’s fortunes look less bright in their third year in the top flight.
Wolves Chief Executive Jez Moxey talked about McCarthy’s firing and thanked the manager for his services.
"This has been a decision we've taken with a heavy heart but we have to act in the best interests of the club. We've had brilliant times with Mick McCarthy and it is sad it has come to an end. But I'm sure it won't be long before he's back in management. We now have two weeks until our next game against Newcastle, which is enough time to find a new manager and turn our fortunes around."
