Add this to your list of strange sports injuries: CF Valencia midfielder Ever Banega will go under the knife for a broken ankle sustained when he was run over by a car. That doesn’t sound too strange until you find out that the Argentina international was run over by the car he was driving.

Banega was at a petrol station filling up his car when the accident occurred. Having apparently forgotten to apply the hand brake, the car ran backwards over his left leg, trapping it and causing fractures to the tibia and fibula. Even worse, the break wasn't clean, so it looks as though Banega will be out for at least the rest of the season. They won't be able to operate until the swelling goes down, so we'll have a better prognosis then, but for now this looks like a huge blow for Valencia's hopes in Europe. The seven-point cushion they have over fourth-place Athletic Bilbao should be enough to keep them sitting pretty in La Liga, at least.

Iran thought they had advanced to the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout round. A less frequent aspect of the offside law disallowed the winning goal.
