England have a new captain. With Chelsea centre back John Terry stripped of the honour for the second time in his career, the Three Lions were in need of a leader who could guide them to European Championship glory. Steven Gerrard was the name on most peoples’ lists, with others too young, inexperienced, or nice, but interim manager Stuart Pearce has sprung a bit of a surprise by naming Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Scott Parker to the post.
Scott Parker Named England Captain
Interim England boss Stuart Pearce has sprung a surprise, naming Scott Parker captain over Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard.
Parker is only one year removed from a long spell of international exile, having gone four years without a cap, but the 31-year-old has been extremely impressive over the past two seasons, having been named Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year for the 2010/11 season and then the fans’ England Player of the Year in January. This doesn’t appear to be an injury-enforced selection, either - Gerrard is still in the starting lineup to face Holland at Wembley - and although it’s not clear whether Pearce’s reach will extend to the summer tournament, this could well be the first step towards England being led out by a 60s comic book hero at Euro 2012.
“I’m Scottie Parker, captain of England.”
