Zenit St. Petersburg have suffered a huge blow today as it has been revealed that Portuguse midfielder Danny will be out for an extended period after suffering a knee injury during training. The press release on Zenit’s website paints a pretty discouraging picture - it sounds like Danny will be out until around early October.

Danny underwent an in-depth medical test on February 6th in one of the Florentine medical clinics. He was diagnosed with a total break of the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee, and with damage to the posterior horn of his medial meniscus. Danny was injured when turning with the ball during practice.

Danny is expected to miss about 8 months while recovering.

This is pretty awful news for both Zenit’s league campaign and their quest to advance against Benfica in the Champions League; Danny is arguably Russian football’s best player and they’ll be nowhere near as potent without him on the side. It’s also not particularly great news for Portugal’s campaign in Euro 2012 - although Danny has never really shone at the international level he still represents important depth for one of the dark horses to claim the title, and now they’re not going to be able to use him at all.
