Chris Wondolowski has been the best scorer in MLS over the past two years, netting 34 goals during that time. The San Jose Earthquakes did the only sensible thing on Wednesday, granting Wondolowski an extension that will keep him under their control until 2016.

This is the second straight season in which Wondolowski has been given an extension and is just further proof that the Earthquakes see him as much more than a flash in the pan, despite the fact that he had scored just five MLS goals prior to the 2010 season. Since then, the 29-year-old has led the league in goals for two straight seasons and earned six caps with the United States national team. The rise is made all the more impressive when you consider Wondolowski has twice scored as many goals in a game (three) as he had in any season prior to 2010.
