Stuart Pearce Named Interim Manager Of England National Team

Less than a day after Fabio Capello announced his resignation as the England national team manager, The FA have named Stuart Pearce as the interim manager. The 49-year-old Pearce will take charge of the team for their friendly match against the Netherlands on Feb. 29 while the FA looks for a permanent replacement.

Pearce has been the manager of the England U-21 side since 2007 and was the expected choice to take over the team on an interim basis. In addition to his duties as U-21 boss, Pearce will be coaching the Great Britain Olympic team -- a U-23 team with three overage players -- at the London 2012 Olympics. Before taking over as England U-21 manager, Pearce was the manager of Manchester City for two seasons. Pearce played over 1000 professional football matches as a defender during his playing career and represented England 78 times.

This is almost certainly not a case where an interim manager can win himself the job by getting good results during his time at the post. England will be looking for a much more experienced manager to take over the job on a permanent basis.
