The FA have confirmed Wednesday night that Fabio Capello has resigned as manager of the England national team. Capello expressed, very explicitly, the decision by The FA to strip John Terry of the captaincy while his trial for racial harassment was pending. Capello was not consulted about the decision to remove Terry from the captaincy. Capello and The FA had a meeting about the issue on Wednesday, after which Capello resigned and his resignation was accepted.

Said FA Chairman David Bernstein:

“I would like to stress that during today’s meeting and throughout his time as England Manager, Fabio has conducted himself in an extremely professional manner. We have accepted Fabio’s resignation, agreeing this is the right decision. We would like to thank Fabio for his work with the England team and wish him every success in the future.”

England plays in the Euro 2012 championships in June, and will be keen to appoint a permanent manager shortly. No announcement has been made yet about a caretaker manager.
