FC Basel did brilliantly to beat Manchester United to get into the UEFA Champions League knockout stages, then defeat Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie, but their dream run is now over. A rampant Bayern side with a newly-found attitude problem took Basel out behind the woodshed and beat them senseless, laying a 7-0 beating on the Swiss champions to win the tie 7-1.

Mario Gomez scored four goals and he was unlucky to not score six. Arjen Robben scored two goals, the opener that leveled the tie and the final goal of the evening. The ultimate tie-winning goal was the fantastic half-volley strike by Thomas Müller that made it 2-0 on the night and 2-1 on aggregate in the 41st minute.
Basel was very much in the tie for the opening 40 minutes of the match, but they completely fell apart when Müller’s goal went in. They immediately let in another goal by Gomez, and that goal made it 3-0 at halftime. Bayern picked up right where they left off in the second half, netting four more goals as Gomez completely dominated the game. He won 50-50 challenges with defenders, held up the ball and distributed all as well as he finished in a man of the match performance.
