Villarreal's poor season has been Miguel Angel Lotina's gain. Just one day after the club sacked Jose Molina, they've announced that Lotina - their third manager this season - will take the reigns of the troubled club. With Villarreal just one place above the relegation spots, you can understand them panicking and sending Molina packing, but Molina only had 11 games at the helm himself after succeeding Juan Carlos Garrido and never really had a chance to get going.
Villarreal Appoint Miguel Angel Lotina To Succeed Jose Molina
Teams don’t often go through two full-time managers in one season, and Villarreal president Fernando Roig has acknowledged that they’re in a strange situation:
We have made a decision that is not usually taken at this club, which is changing the coach twice (in one season). We are all aware of what we’re up against and this club will do everything possible to change the situation. We will make every effort to take this project forward. We have 11 finals and we are convinced we will succeed.
Lotina has plenty of experience in battling relegation, but it’s unclear how effectively his defence-minded football can be implemented at Villarreal. No matter what, they’re in a great deal of trouble, and two managerial sackings indicate that continuing the merry-go-round isn’t going to help matters that much.
