Arsenal now have a secure grip on third place in the Premier League, while Wigan Athletic are finally off the bottom spot in the league. They pulled off a fantastic upset win at Anfield, and Liverpool are now much closer to the bottom half than they are to Europe. Surely King Kenny is immune to the sack?
Premier League Week 30, Saturday Scores: Arsenal Cruise, Wigan Beat Liverpool At Anfield
Arsenal 3-0 Aston Villa
This one was over before it started. Kieran Gibbs capitalized on some terrible defending to open the scoring 16 minutes in and Theo Walcott doubled Arsenal's lead in the 25th minute. In stoppage time, Mikel Arteta scored one of the goals of the season with an absolutely stunning 25-yard free kick.
Bolton are out of the drop zone and Blackburn are back in the relegation race after their two-game winning streak was snapped. David Wheater scored both Bolton goals in the first half, and both were headers on corners. Steven N'Zonzi got Blackburn back into the match in the 56th minute, but they couldn't find an equalizer
Liverpool 1-2 Wigan Athletic
Well, the wheels really have fallen off at Anfield, haven't they? So much for all of that "a trophy will give them the confidence to challenge for Europe" stuff. Liverpool have lost five of their last six games in the league. They dug themselves an early hole in this one, giving away a 30th minute penalty that Shaun Maloney converted. Luis Suarez equalized early in the second half, but some bad set piece marking allowed Gary Caldwell to score a 63rd minute winner.
Norwich City 2-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers
So close to an Eric Cantona hat trick for Grant Holt! He scored twice and was sent off, missing out on the assist needed for the feat. Matt Jarvis put Wolves up early in the 25th, but Holt answered instantly with a 26th minute equalizer. Just before halftime, Norwich won a penalty for a handball and Holt scored what would eventually be the winner. He was sent off in the 84th.
QPR's spending doesn't appear to be keeping them up. They're in the bottom three after this loss to Sunderland. Nicklas Bendtner scored for the Black Cats just after halftime, but things didn't really get back for Rangers until Djibril Cisse got sent off. He put his side a man down in the 55th minute with an abysmal tackle on Fraizer Campbell, for which he's going to miss at least three, if not four games. Sunderland jumped out to a 3-0 lead and Taye Taiwo scored a garbage goal for the visitors.
Swansea City 0-2 Everton
Swansea were dominant in possession at home as per usual, but they were very poor in front of the net. They hardly challenged Tim Howard, only managing one shot on target. Leighton Baines scored with a trademark free kick in the 59th minute and Nikica Jelavic sealed the Toffees' win in the 76th.
