Adam Moffat was suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount for his hard tackle on Osvaldo Alonso in the 35th minute of last Friday's game between the Seattle Sounders and Houston Dynamo, MLS announced on Friday. At the same time, it was announced that Alvaro Fernandez was fined an undisclosed amount for embellishing contact in the 82nd minute.
Adam Moffat Suspended, Alvaro Fernandez Fined For Separate Incidents
Adam Moffat’s tackle, Alvaro Fernandez’s embellishment draw ire of MLS.

Both actions are moves in the right direction for MLS. While Moffat appeared to get at least some of the ball on his tackle, it was late and with his cleats clearly exposed. That Alonso was not injured and that Moffat got a piece of the ball does not make the tackle any less reckless.
The fine on Fernandez also seems appropriate. Brad Davis clearly made contact with Fernandez on the play in question, but it was not nearly as serious as Fernandez made it seem. Fernandez appeared to be attempting to draw a second yellow card on Davis by rolling around and acting as if he had been hit in the face.
This was the first such fine of the year, but it continues a program MLS started last year when Charlie Davies and Alvaro Saborio were both fined for diving. In Saborio’s case, he was also suspended. In those situations, it was in an attempt to draw a penalty, which may have factored into their punishments.
