It was not a huge surprise when Kyle Martino was introduced as the newest member of NBC’s MLS broadcast team on Monday. The hiring had been rumored for at least several weeks. But Monday’s announcement did come with a bit of a twist: Martino won’t be joining Arlo White in the broadcast booth.

Rather, he’ll be providing analysis from “Between the Benches,” similar to how NBC Sports handles their NHL broadcasts where Pierre McGuire is stationed “Inside the Glass.”
I’ll admit, I’m not necessarily a huge Martino fan. But I am intrigued by this setup. Unlike normal sideline reporters who provide almost no insight, Martino will presumably be providing real analysis with a unique perspective. At the very least, this should provide something innovative to the world of soccer broadcasting.
We’ll get our first taste of how this works on March 11, when MLS makes its NBC Sports debut with a match between the New York Red Bulls and FC Dallas.
