Shalrie Joseph Receives One-Match Ban For Tackle On Ricardo Villar

Presswire

Shalrie Joseph became the latest player to receive retroactive punishment for the MLS Disciplinary Committee. Joseph received a one-game ban and an undisclosed fine for his tackle from behind on FC Dallas midfielder Ricardo Villar during last week's game. The New England Revolution will now have to play D.C. United without one of their top players.

Unlike some of the previous retroactive punishments, there was no further explanation given on why Joseph was suspended. In looking at the film, Joseph’s tackle was certainly dangerous, but it also looks less purposeful than some of the other tackles that have drawn the ire of MLS.

Assuming Joseph saw Villar, it was an ill-advised tackle. Villar was also stretchered off the field and did not return to the game, while Joseph was shown a yellow card.

Still, the force of the tackle and the small window in which it occurred makes it feel as though a yellow card may have been a sufficient punishment.
