With two matches remaining, Reading have secured automatic promotion to the Premier League with a narrow 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest. The win is the Royals’ 27th of the season, giving them 88 points and the chance to compete in England’s highest division.

Reading’s recent history has been a bit of a roller coaster, with the team last winning the Championship in 2005-2006. After just two seasons in the Premier League, they found themselves relegated on the final day of the 2007-2008 season. Last year they made it to the playoff final at Wembley, but lost 4-2, a day that manager Brian McDermott calls his worst moment in football.

But Reading have plenty to celebrate now, and for the next few months as they prepare a squad with the ability to compete at the top. Southampton, with a five point lead over West Ham, will likely join the Royals, with the Irons, Birmingham City, Blackpool, and Cardiff the most likely to challenge for the playoffs.
