Rafa Marquez Suspended Three Games For Tackling Shea Salinas

Rafael Marquez was suspended three games and fined an undisclosed amount of money for tackling, falling on and kicking Shea Salinas during a corner kick during the New York Red Bulls game against the San Jose Earthquakes last Saturday. Salinas suffered a broken collarbone on the play. Amazingly, a foul was not even called on the play at the time.

In suspending Marquez, the league’s Disciplinary Committee said his actions were “viewed as violent conduct that demonstrated blatant disregard for the safety of his opponent.”

By the time Marquez is eligible to play again this year, he'll have served five games worth of suspensions and played in only four. He started this year by serving the final two games of another three-game suspension that he was given for his throwing the ball at Landon Donovan at the end of a MLS Cup playoff game last year.

Earthquakes midfielder Marvin Chavez was also suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount for a tackle from behind in the 52nd minute. He was given a yellow card at the time.
