How bad are things at Toronto FC? Well, even in the case of one of their few bright spots, it appears there was some significant mismanagement.
Joao Plata’s Mystery Transfer Fee Just Another Example Of Toronto FC Mismanagement
Joao Plata, arguably the team's best player last year, cost TFC a $500,000 transfer fee without the team's top decision-makers realizing it, according to a Canadian Soccer News report.
It is worth pointing out that Aron Winter and Paul Mariner had only been hired about a week before the MLS SuperDraft, but that also speaks to a certain kind of mismanagement. Waiting until so close to the biggest day of the offseason to make such an important pair of signings, especially ones who weren't moving over from other MLS jobs, was horrible planning.
That this happened at TFC is pretty much perfect, though. Whenever something can go wrong there, it invariably does. I don’t know that there are any easy answers, but they better find them quick.
