Automatic Promotions, Playoff Berths Decided In Championship

Southampton’s 4-0 victory over Coventry have booked them a spot in next year’s Premier League -- but who will be the third club to go up?

After a full day of action in England’s second division, the dust has settled a bit and we’re able to sort out who’s going where. Well, kinda. Those Championship playoffs can be a bit of a headache, particularly on a Saturday.

After thrashing already-relegated Coventry City 4-0, Southampton will join Reading in the Premier League for 2012-2013. West Ham United, Birmingham City, Blackpool and Cardiff City are set for the playoffs, while Middlesbrough just barely missed out on a spot.

On the other end, Doncaster and Portsmouth will be joining Coventry in League 1 next season. Charlton will be one of the clubs taking their place in the Championship. A club from Sheffield will certainly join as well, although whether it will be United or Wednesday remains to be seen. I suppose, technically, after the playoffs it could be both. One of the Sheffields will face MK Dons, Huddersfield, and most likely Stevenage, although Notts County could nick in.
