David Ferreira's road back from last year's season-ending injury took a frustrating detour on Tuesday when it was announced that he has undergone a "minor" surgery to repair a small fracture in his right foot. The FC Dallas midfielder, who was the MLS MVP in 2010, will be out 6-8 weeks as he recovers.
David Ferreira Undergoes ‘Minor’ Surgery, Will Miss 6-8 Weeks
David Ferreira has not played for FC Dallas since last April when he broke his ankle.
“David injured his right foot during a training match in Florida. This is an unfortunate, un-related injury to the one he suffered last season,” Dr. James C Walter II said in a team release. “This fracture is in a bone in the back of the foot that is prone to injury in soccer players and dancers. It causes pain with both running and kicking. While the pain usually resolves with rest and rehab, David has failed to progress satisfactorily with conservative, non-surgical treatment. He and the team have elected to proceed with surgical excision of the problematic bone.”
Ferreira last played on April 23, 2011 when he suffered an ankle break when he was tackled from behind. At various times, it's looked like his return was imminent only to suffer setbacks. This news comes at a particularly inopportune time as FC Dallas is coming off a 4-1 loss to D.C. United that dropped them to 1-2-1 in the young season.
