The Montreal Impact's first ever Major League Soccer win was always going to be a sweet one, but picking it up against their rivals, Toronto FC? That is just as sweet as can be. The Impact played inarguably their best match of the season against their Canadian rivals, to pick up a deserved 2-1 win and leave the Reds still without a point in the league.
Montreal Impact Vs. Toronto FC, 2012 MLS: Impact Defeat Rivals For First-Ever MLS Win
As delightful as it must have been for Montreal to get their first win and play their best match of the season, they got considerable help from Toronto. The first goal was only possible because of an awful giveaway by Terry Dunfield, but Sinisa Ubiparipovic does deserve credit for a perfectly slotted finish from 20 yards to give the Impact an 18th minute lead.
A 65th minute red card to Logan Emory basically killed Toronto's chances of coming back. The defender took down Sanna Nyassi just outside the box and with him being the last defender denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, the referee had to show him a red card.
Andrew Wenger sealed up the Impact win in the 81st minute thanks to some shoddy defending by Ty Harden. Harden beat Wenger to the long ball, but with Wenger all over him, Harden decided to try and turn and elude Wenger instead of just booting it out for a thrown in. That proved costly when Wenger was able to take it from him and beat Milos Kocic for the rookie's first MLS goal.
Danny Koevermans added a late goal to bring Toronto within one and give them a bit of hope, but the reality is that they just weren't good enough on this day. Despite the hype around them in the preseason, the Reds remain at the bottom of the league, below their expansion Canadian rivals and leading their fans to wonder if they can ever have a good team.
