Newcastle United continue to raid France for talent. The Magpies, who finished a very credible sixth in this year’s Premier League campaign, largely on the back of signings out of the French and German leagues. Now they’re at it again, snapping up Riems midfielder Romain Amalfitano on a free transfer:

Newcastle United have signed 22-year-old midfielder Romain Amalfitano on a free transfer.

Newcastle United can today announce the signing of midfielder Romain Amalfitano. The 22-year-old Frenchman will join the Club when his contract at Reims expires on Saturday, 30th June. He will officially become a Newcastle player on Sunday, 1st July.
Born in Nice, Amalfitano is a versatile midfielder who is equally comfortable operating on either the right flank or in a central role.
Amalfitano is not to be confused with brother Morgan, who's starred for Marseille this season and been called up to the French national team as a result. Instead, this is a much less splashy signing. Many will point to Newcastle's previous success with the like of Yohan Cabaye and Papiss Cisse as evidence of an incredible scouting system (and therefore evidence that Amalfitano will immediately become an impact player) but the former Riems man is a long way off being as impressive as Newcastle's current leading lights were before they joined the club. He's still got a little bit of developing to do.
