New York Red Bulls Vs. Chivas USA, 2012 MLS: Goats Grab An Away Point

Chivas USA was overjoyed to finally beat the LA Galaxy on Saturday night, their first victory over their rivals in five years, but that wasn't enough for Robin Fraser's crew. That win was just supposed to be one step in the club's return to respectability, and they took another step in that direction on Wednesday with a 1-1 draw at the New York Red Bulls.

Despite getting severely outplayed in the first half, Chivas held on. They were sloppy at the back but made a good block here and there, and then got Dan Kennedy to step up when their defense failed them. That the Red Bulls' finishing was atrocious helped, too, ruining what was otherwise a fantastic half for New York.

Having survived the first half, Chivas got a little more going in the second 45 minutes and not long after the break they got a goal thanks to some great finishing by Juan Pablo Angel. The former Red Bulls striker was able to turn and hit a scissor kick off of a header back across goal to leave Ryan Meara helpless. It was really a goal out of nothing as it looked like Angel had no chance to get the ball on-frame, but Angel had other thoughts and was rewarded for his ambition.

Up a goal, the Goats just tried to hold on and they got burned. New York broke quickly and got the ball out to the blazing Dane Richards, who delivered a good cross to Kenny Cooper. Thanks to Richards' cross, Cooper only had to tap in from five yards and the Red Bulls were even.

New York kept pushing for a winner and Dax McCarty even beat Kennedy once, but Ante Jazic cleared the ball off the line. It wasn't the prettiest performance, but it was a point for Chivas and now makes them undefeated in their last three. That doesn't sound impressive, but that's a big deal for Chivas. Next step, respectability.
