D.C. United is still a ways away from even talking about breaking ground on a new stadium, but the process at least appears to have a timeline for the first time. Team president Kevin Payne told the Washington Post that there could soon be news about a new investor and a concrete plan for a stadium.
DC United’s Stadium May Finally Have A Timeline
DC United President Kevin Payne indicates the team may soon have news on a new investor and possible stadium progress.
”We’ve told the District [government] that we would like to sit down in the near future to further discuss our future in the city, but it makes more sense for that conversation to take place after potential changes in the composition of our ownership have taken place.
“We hope these conversations with new partners will come to fruition this spring and conversations with the District can resume in late spring or early summer.”
Just having a timeline would be a huge step forward from where this has stalled in recent years. D.C. United, which as recently as a few years ago was one of the marquee teams in the league, plays in dilapidated RFK Stadium. Although they’ve re-arranged seating capacity to be more MLS-appropriate, it’s still cavernous and easily the most outdated of any stadium in the league.
That this stadium could potentially be within the District would be doubly good news, as most recent talk had suggested the team could move to suburban Virginia or even to Baltimore.
