Referees are easily the most unpopular people in sports. They are viciously chastised when they make mistakes, given virtually no credit with they do their job well, it’s a truly thankless job. They are used to the treatment but every once in awhile a line gets crossed.

Such was life for Carlos Clos Gómez who worked the Real Madrid vs. Granada match this weekend. His penalty call that proved the difference in the match was by all accounts the correct decision, but Granada's players and coaches saw things differently and reacted violently.
Gómez was hit in the head by a bottle thrown by Granada’s Dani Benítez. The internet connection and hot water for the referee’s locker room was cut off. Granada’s goalkeeping coach broke the lock on the door and told the referee, “you’re dead, you son of a bitch.”
