Russia Vs. Czech Republic, Euro 2012: Roman Shirokov Doubles Russians’ Lead

Many people thought Russia had no chance to duplicate their deep run in Euro 2008. The Russians’ response? “Watch this.”

After scoring in the 15th minute to go in front of the Czech Republic, Russia have now gotten a goal from Roman Shirokov and lead 2-0. It was a gorgeous goal and the assist went to 2008's golden boy, Andrei Arshavin. Russia took the ball and broke quickly, getting four men into the attack against three Czech defenders. Shirokov fed Arshavin on the left, who then hit a great ball through the Czech defense. It was right into the path of Shirokov, who was in behind the defense, and he finished simply to double the Russians' lead.

Russia look absolutely deadly in the attack. They are breaking with pace and putting the Czechs on the back foot whenever they are on the ball. This looks just like 2008’s Russia, only they might be better. That the Czechs aren’t very good does help, too.

We have live coverage of the game in our Russia vs. Czech Republic, Euro 2012 StoryStream. For more on Euro 2012 and the entire world of football, follow @SBNationSoccer on Twitter.
