AC Milan, Thiago Silva Reach 5-Year Deal

Milan have signed the centre back to a new long-term deal, successfully fending off interest from PSG and Barcelona in the process.

AC Milan have successfully fended off suitors for half Thiago Silva, signing the 27-year-old to a new five year deal that will keep the defender at the San Siro through the 2016/17 season. The Brazil centre back is widely regarded as one of the three best in his position and there was corresponding interest in his services from (other) top teams around Europe.

Paris Saint-Germain were leading the charge, with the Ligue 1 runners up attempting an audacious 45M bid to pry him away from Milan, but they certainly weren’t the only team interested, with both Barcelona and Manchester City also linked. With the team apparently in some danger of falling afoul of UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules, there was some thought that they could alleviate most of their concerns with a major sale, but it now looks certain that it won’t be Thiago Silva.

That, of course, is a good thing for Milan. He’s a world-class player, and for a club with Milan’s sort of ambition, it makes no sense to get rid of someone that good while still in his prime. Well done on keeping him.
