Montreal Impact Vs. New York Red Bulls, 2012 MLS: So About Those Really Good Red Bulls

A week ago it looked like the New York Red Bulls might be the best team in MLS. Sebastien Le Toux gave them another creative force behind two fine strikers and Connor Lade made their midfield a force to be reckoned with. But in true Red Bulls fashion, as soon as they started to hit their stride and people lavished them with praise, they no-showed and got beaten by the Montreal Impact, 3-1, on Saturday. Way to go, New York.

It was clear that New York would be in for a long day early on. Markus Holgersson was wide open four yards in front of goal and somehow managed to shoot it over the bar, beginning what would be a long night at Stade Saputo.

Saturday marked the MLS debut for Montreal's Designated Player, Alessandro Nesta, but it was their first DP who got them on the scoreboard just after halftime. Marco di Vaio got open on the left and Justin Mapp slid the ball in for him. The Italian then finished well to the far post and the home side were a goal up.

Two minutes later, Davy Arnaud doubled the Impact's lead, which proved vital because Thierry Henry found the net before the hour mark. With Montreal's lead down to one, Sanna Nyassi came through and put the nail in New York's coffin. He took a ball from Felipe and rounded the goalkeeper before finishing from a tight angle and ending New York's hopes for a comeback, slash being legitimately good.
