As society continues to accept and more fairly treat homosexual people, more and more homosexuals have openly stated their sexuality.

In sports, people have been a little slower to come out as gay and the atmosphere isn't quite as accepting, but it is also coming along. Megan Rapinoe helped that come along a little bit more on Monday when she came out as gay in Out Magazine.

“To be honest I’ve been thinking about it for a while, trying to find a time that works, now leading up to the Olympics, people want to get personal stories,” she told USA Today after. “Our team in general is in a position where people look up to us and kids look up to us. I embrace that and I think I have a huge LGBT following. I think it’s pretty cool, the opportunity that I have, especially in sports. There’s really not that many out athletes. It’s important to be out and to live my life that way.

“It’s about standing up and being counted and saying you’re proud of who you are.”

And Rapinoe has certainly stood up. She had come out to her family and teammates previously and, while most who followed the team knew she was gay, she has now said so publicly.

It’s great that Rapinoe can comfortably come out and admit that she is who she is. Here’s hoping that in the near future a player’s sexuality won’t be news anymore.
