Wigan Athletic need some reinforcing, especially if they lose Victor Moses this summer. Happily for the club, they've done exactly that, acquiring Ivory Coast international Arouna Kone from La Liga side Levante. He made an impression last season in Spain, scoring 17 goals in 34 league matches, and will certainly boost a strike force that features both Connor Sammon and Franco di Santo. Which is to say, nobody.

Kone's probably not as good as his goalscoring record last year indicates*, having only managed one in 41 La Liga appearances prior to the 2011/12 season. But he's also an obvious upgrade at centre forward for the Latics and Roberto Martinez, and it's entirely possible that he has taken a grand leap forward at age 28. For Wigan, who are in serious danger of relegation this season, it's a gamble that seems to be well worth taking.

*Although he was apparently rested for ‘scoring too many goals’ -- 18 would have resulted in him being automatically returned to former club Sevilla, from whom he was on loan. This amuses me greatly.
