That didn't take long. The FA has fined Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand £45,000 for 'improper conduct'. Specifically, they fined him because he retweeted a racially insensitive tweet directed towards Ashley Cole which called the defender a 'choc ice'. Reading the FA ruling requires some suspension of your innate disbelief that a legal(ish) document would ever include the word 'hahahahahahha!!', but there you go.

The FA could potentially have banned Ferdinand for the tweet, which referred to Cole's support of John Terry during the Chelsea captain's trial over the alleged abuse of Anton Ferdinand, but, thankfully, they opted to be at least somewhat sensible and stuck to what, for Ferdinand, is a relatively minor fine. While the 33-year-old reacted with contempt to the decision to fine him over what he maintained was an entirely innocuous comment, you'd have to imagine that he was privately relieved that he wasn't missing any time to start the season.
