Tottenham Hotspur Sign Emmanuel Adebayor

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Emmanuel Adebayor from Manchester City. The centre forward enjoyed a successful loan spell at White Hart Lane last season.

If you were to look at Tottenham Hotspur's squad, you'd find one absolutely glaring weakness: Their complete lack of striking options. With Emmanuel Adebayor returning to parent club Manchester City after a strong season at White Hart Lane and Roman Pavlyuchenko going back to Russia, only Jermain Defoe remained as a reasonable centre forward option for Andre Villas-Boas. And Defoe's not a Champions League quality player, nor is he particularly close.

Fortunately for Spurs fans, they’ve addressed this issue:

The Adebayor deal comes as a bit of a surprise considering the Togo international’s wages at City vs. those that Spurs could reasonably offer. It’s unclear just how Tottenham have worked around it, but what matters is that centre forward has gone from an obvious position of weakness to a real strength. This is probably the best move Spurs could have made if they’re serious about cracking the top four once again.

City, meanwhile, will be more than happy to stop paying Adebayor's wages -- they have Carlos Tevez, Mario Balotelli, Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko, all superior players, on their payroll, and getting rid of the cash they're spending on their fifth-choice centre forward can only be a good thing. Given the salary concerns Tottenham will have had over Adebayor, it's difficult to see much in the way of a transfer fee, however.
