Sunderland Confirm Steven Fletcher Signing

Sunderland have confirmed the signing of 25-year-old centre forward Steven Fletcher from relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Sunderland have confirmed the signing of former Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Steven Fletcher after a prolonged chase for the striker. With Wolves relelgated last season (through no fault of Fletcher's, who scored twelve goals in 26 league starts) and Sunderland in need of a striker after the return of the on-loan Nicklas Bendtner to Arsenal, this deal makes perfect sense, although the reported price -- £12M -- is making many blanch.

Martin O'Neill is no stranger to spending big money, however, and he's thrilled to have Fletcher on board:

It has been no secret that we needed to strengthen our attacking options and Steven has a proven track record of scoring goals. He is young and constantly improving and he will be a very welcome addition to the squad. I’m delighted that we’ve been able to bring him to Sunderland.

Fletcher, 25, is one of the few players who have succeeded in England after beginning their careers in the Scotland. He’s now played in three Premier League seasons, notching a total of thirty goals in the process. The Black Cats will be hoping for a little bit more for their money.
