Goals Of The Week: Hopelessly Obscure Edition

Mario Götze aside, this week’s entrants are all people you’ve never heard of before and never will again.Follow @SBNationSoccer

The international break doesn’t spoil all football fun. In the more obscure corners of the football world, the action continues, and there’s always the potential for some showboating when there are teams like the Faroe Islands around. That Gotze goal aside, here’s a selection from players you’ve never heard of, for clubs that sound made up, in countries you couldn’t point out on a map.

5. John Fajardo, DEPORTIVO CREDICOOP Vs. Mariscal Mille

Just the 80 yards for this goal, which makes David Beckham vs. Wimbledon look like a tap-in.

4. Mario Götze, GERMANY Vs. Faroe Islands

The defending was awful, the game was a procession, and the Faroe Islands are terrible. Those are three things we don’t care about.

3. Daniel Da Mota, LUXEMBOURG Vs. Portugal

In a match that should’ve been a foregone conclusion, Da Mota gives Portugal an almighty scare by putting Luxembourg in the lead with this almighty thunderbolt. Note the Luxembourg manager’s look of baffled amazement before he realises he should probably celebrate.

2. Sean Murray, Italy U-21s Vs. IRELAND U-21S

The sort of chip you don’t see that often anymore, taking the goalkeeper totally by surprise. It’s the first goal on the video - sadly they covered up the best goal of an utterly insane match with some commentators.

1. Jacob Kohler - Skjold Birkerod Vs. FREM

We end, as we perhaps always should, with a goalkeeper goal to score a last-minute equaliser. Note the careful cinematography here, the way the cameraman focuses on the clock to add dramatic tension as the goalkeeper advances up the pitch in the foreground. He knew.
