Andre Villas-Boas has chosen Jermain Defoe to lead Spurs' line as a lone striker in favour of summer signings Emmanuel Adebayor and Clint Dempsey, both of whom start on the bench.
Reading Vs. Tottenham Hotspur: Lineups
Jermain Defoe and Brad Friedel start for Tottenham, with Hugo Lloris, Emmanuel Adebayor, and Clint Dempsey on the bench. Meanwhile, Jimmy Kebe fails to come back from injury in time to make the Reading lineup.

There is also no debut for new signing Hugo Lloris, with the in-form Brad Friedel keeping the France captain resigned to a place among the substitutes. Another summer signing, Moussa Dembele, does however get a place in the starting eleven.
Reading, meanwhile, continue with Pavel Pogrebnyak up front, with Adam Le Fondre on the bench and Danny Guthrie continuing in midfield. The club had hoped that Jimmy Kebe would return to the side after suffering a hamstring injury, but he remains on the absent list, along with Jason Roberts.
Reading (4-4-1-1): McCarthy; Gunter, Harte, Gorkss, Pearce; Karacan, Leigertwood, McAnuff, McCleary; Guthrie; Pogrebnyak. Bench: S Taylor, Shorey, Mariappa, Cummings, Robson-Kanu, Le Fondre, Hunt
Tottenham Hotspur (4-2-3-1): Friedel; Walker, Gallas, Vertonghen, Naughton; Sandro, Dembele; Lennon, Sigurdsson, Bale; Defoe. Bench: Lloris, Caulker, Dawson, Huddlestone, Townsend, Adebayor, Dempsey
