MLS Draft 2013: Revolution take Andrew Farrell with No. 1 pick

New England Revolution use the No. 1 pick they acquired via trade with Toronto FC to take the player most agreed was the best player available.

Following what most draft prognosticators pegged as the best player available, the New England Revolution used the No. 1 pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft to select Louisville's Andrew Farrell. The Revolution had moved up from the No. 4 overall pick a night earlier by trading that pick and some allocation money to Toronto FC.

Although Farrell was one of Louisville’s top scorers, he is expected to slot in as a defender with the Revolution. Assuming that’s where he plays, he’ll actually bolster one of the stronger parts of the Revolution’s team, as they allowed the ninth fewest goals in MLS.

Farrell was considered to be one of the top athletes in the draft, possessing what scouts called great speed, while being even better in the air. That kind of athleticism could make him a good fit as a centerback or outside back. He’s also a danger getting forward, which could mean that he’ll see some time as a wide midfielder.
