Napoli have points deduction for match-fixing overturned on appeal

Napoli have had a two-point deduction for match-fixing overturned after appealing against the decision.

Napoli's two-point deduction over match-fixing has been overturned after the Italian club were successful in an appeal.

Former goalkeeper Matteo Gianello had confessed to attempting to fix a match against Sampdoria in 2010, with the Italian FA previously ruling that Napoli had been "objectively responsible" for the act.

Now, however, their two point ban has been overturned, along with Paolo Cannavaro and Gianluca Grava's six-month bans for failing to report the incident. A 70,000 Euro fine for the club has also been reduced to 50,000 Euros.

Club lawyer Mattia Grassani said: “It’s a sensational victory and a really important result.

”Above all, justice has been done and what was unjustly taken from Napoli and its fans has been returned. It was a joy to inform president (Aurelio) De Laurentiis after I received the official report from the appeal court.

“This decision closes a really sad story for which Napoli and its players paid a very high price regardless.”

Napoli are now back up to second place in Serie A, just three points behind Juventus.
