Africa Cup of Nations hosts South Africa are now in excellent position to advance to the knockout stages of the competition, following their impressive 2-0 win over Angola on Wednesday. Bafana Bafana's attack was anemic against Cape Verde in a disappointing 0-0 draw, but they sit on four points thanks to a pair of good goals from Siyabonga Sangweni and Lehlohonolo Majoro.
South Africa vs. Angola: Final score 2-0, Bafana Bafana grab first Africa Cup of Nations win
Angola’s defense wasn’t nearly as good on Wednesday as it was in their opening game, as they let in two goals in a loss to South Africa.
Sangweni’s goal came in the 30th minute, off of a free kick and a fortunate deflection. Angola defender Lunguinha attempted to nod the ball to safety, but merely provided a great far post attacking flick-on. With the goal at his mercy, Sangweni finished easily.
An impressive counter-attack and finish produced South Africa's second goal of the game and sunk Angola's hopes of clawing their way back in. Reneilwe Letsholonyane provided the assist for Majoro, who placed an impressive close-range finish through traffic, under Angola goalkeeper Lama from a narrow angle to seal a massive three points for Bafana Bafana.
