Newcastle United suffered their first loss of the January transfer window when Demba Ba headed to Chelsea on Friday, but also secured their first signing of the window when they confirmed the pick-up of French international defender Mathieu Debuchy on a five-and-a-half year contract.
Newcastle United sign Mathieu Debuchy
Newcastle confirmed the signing of French international defender Mathieu Debuchy on Friday.

A right back, the 27-year-old has been capped 12 times for the French National Team and spent nine senior seasons with Lille OSC. He had over 230 appearances with Les Dogues during his long spell with the club, and the team won a Ligue 1 and Coupe De France double in 2011 with Debuchy as a member of the squad.
Newcastle have struggled defensively at times this season, the biggest proof being their recent lopsided 7-3 loss to Arsenal. They are currently sitting 15th in the table, only two points out of the relegation zone. With Ba now on the Blues, Debuchy will surely not be the final move for the busy Magpies before January's window finally closes.
