Copa del Rey, Fifth Round: Malaga and Valencia advance
Malaga and Valencia both dispatched their foes and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey
Malaga 4-1 (5-2) Eibar
Malaga turned around a somewhat disappointing first leg draw to easily see off second division side Eibar. 24-year-old Diego Buonanotte was the star scoring twice, while Sebastian Fernandez and Francisco Portillo added goals as well. Eibar’s Guill Roldan was shown a straight red card in the 86th minute but at that point, the match was already decided.
With his side facing a stiff test against Barcelona in five days, Manuel Pellegrini chose to rest several starters, but the risk paid off. For all you US Soccer fans you might be glad to hear that defender Oguchi Onyewu played the full 90 minutes for Malaga.
Valencia 2-1 (4-1) Osasuna
Osasuna already had a difficult task ahead of them as they attempted to overcome a two-goal deficit from the first leg. Their slim hopes weren’t helped in the 36th minute when Valencia’s Tino Costa opened the scoring and effectively ended the tie. Joseba Llorente pulled a goal back a minute later for Los Rojillos, but they never came any closer.
Valencia's Roberto Soldado added a bonus goal in the second half stoppage time as Los Che booked their spot in the next round.
