Perhaps getting out ahead of what seemed to be a foregone conclusion anyway, FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman has announced that he will step down at the end of the season. Dallas was eliminated from the playoff race last week with a 3-2 loss at home to the Chicago Fire, sealing their fate after they fell apart at the start of summer. The team said they will immediately start searching for a new coach.

Dallas has two games remaining in their season, but have already been eliminated from the playoffs.

“I truly appreciate the opportunity to be a part of the FC Dallas family for the last five years,” Hyndman said in a team release. “After a lot of thought and consideration, I feel the time is right for me to step down as head coach of FC Dallas. I want to thank the Hunt family for their support and friendship, our players, coaches and front office for their dedication and effort during my time here, and especially the great FC Dallas fans.”
Hyndman will leave Dallas with a winning record, now 62-57-58, but his five-year tenure was quite a roller-coaster. Dallas was among the worst team in MLS his first year and he then led them to the MLS Cup final in his second, securing MLS coach of the year honors along the way. He followed that up with solid 2011 in which Dallas claimed 52 points despite missing reigning MVP David Ferreira for most of the season.
As it turned out, Ferreira’s injuries came to dominate the final three seasons, as he was never quite the same player that scored eight goals and had 13 assists in 2010.
Still, Dallas jumped out to a blazing start in 2013, leading the Supporters’ Shield race after compiling an 8-3-4 record. Unfortunately, that was followed by an 11-match winless run.
Prior to joining FC Dallas, Hyndman had been a very successful college coach at nearby Southern Methodist University. In 24 seasons at the Dallas-based school, he compiled a 368-98-38.
