West Ham United were not able to build off their impressive thumping of Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, though they certainly looked like a real threat to Manchester City at points. The Citizens played one of their best games of the season and were excellent in front of goal at Upton Park, securing a 3-1 victory.
West Ham United vs. Manchester City: Final score 1-3, Citizens clinical in front of goal
Manchester City continued their recovery from their collapse at Aston Villa, winning their second straight Premier League game in impressive fashion.
Sergio Aguero’s opener came early on, just 16 minutes into the match. While West Ham stacked the midfield with athletic players yet again, they were no match for Fernandinho and Yaya Toure. The former player took advantage of a turnover to set up the first goal, finding Aguero with a through ball, and the Argentinian made the most of the chance with a composed finish.
The remainder of the first half was very back-and-forth, with West Ham having a couple of half-chances, though they couldn’t create anything concrete. The sides headed into the break with City ahead by one goal, and they would go on to expand their lead early in the second half.
Once again, Aguero was the scorer. On a corner kick, David Silva opted to hit a ball towards the near post, where Aguero had made a perfect run. West Ham didn't track him well as he got on the end of the ball and flicked a pretty header past Jussi Jaaskelainen to pad City's advantage.
West Ham fought their way back into the match seven minutes later through Ricardo Vaz Te, who scored his second goal in as many games and his fourth in all competitions with a spectacular overhead kick. Ravel Morrison picked up the assist with a chip into the box for the Portuguese winger, who improvised beautifully to score from the edge of the six-yard box.
Unfortunately for the home side, their side were outplayed from then on out. Alvaro Negredo hit the crossbar with a wicked shot in the 61st minute and the Hammers were put away with 10 minutes to play. Toure set up the goal with a through ball to Aguero, who laid the ball off for Silva to finish, sealing the victory for City.
