CONCACAF Champions League group stage preview: It’s a wild last matchday

Three team groups mean a weird last matchday.

Only in the CONCACAF Champions League could a team head into the final matchday atop their group and have no chance of advancing to the knockout stages. Such is the joy of a tournament with three-team groups where only one advances to the quarterfinals. Such is the joy of CONCACAF.

The Montreal Impact find themselves in that unfortunate position, leading Group 5 on head-to-head results with Heredia, but their four group stage matches have been played, while Heredia and the San Jose Earthquakes still have one last match. A Quakes win will see them vault to the top of the group, while Heredia need just a draw at home to book their quarterfinal spot and all the Impact can do is stare at a table that has them top with no chance of advancing. Oh, CONCACAF.

At least there is something to play for in Group 5, though. The same can't be said of Group 7 and Group 8, where Tijuana and the LA Galaxy have already clinched first and a spot in the quarterfinals. But those are the only groups locked up, leaving six up for grabs this week.

In Group 1, the Houston Dynamo need just a draw to take first place, but they have to get it Arabe Unido, who advance with a win. Sporting Kansas City have the benefit of being at home in the Group 2 finale, where a draw with Olimpia is all they need. It's tough to call Group 3 up for grabs because Herediano need to win by at least three goals to overtake Cruz Azul, but it is at home so who knows. Alajuelense have to get a result on the road to advance, but it is just a point they need. Of course, it's at Club America so there is that, while Comunicaciones need to win by two goals at Toluca to jump to the top of Group 6.
