FC Basel vs. Chelsea: Final score 1-0, Swiss side beat the Blues for second time
Basel took down Chelsea. Again.
Chelsea were absolutely dreadful on the night, failing to register a single shot on goal during a 1-0 Basel win, and yet the night was productive for the Blues thanks to a draw between Steaua Bucharest and Schalke. The draw clinched a spot in the Round of 16 for Chelsea, who received the good fortune despite their terrible showing in Switzerland.
Basel were all over Chelsea from the start, peppering Cech throughout the match. Cech was called upon time and again early, especially on crosses. The Blues didn’t mark well on balls into the box and Basel got several chances as a result, only to see Cech turn them away.
It looked like Chelsea might get away with an undeserved draw, but Basel finally got the goal they deserved three minutes from time through Salah. His good run, which was aided by some poor defending by Branislav Ivanovic, earned Basel a goal and a win.
While Chelsea are already through, Basel need a draw or win in their final match, which is at Schalke. The win will be a tall task, but so was beating Chelsea twice and they managed that just fine.
