West Brom vs. Manchester City: Final score 2-3, Citizens hang on at the Hawthorns

The Citizens snatched an elusive away win at the Hawthorns.

David Rogers

Manchester City have been dreadful away from the Etihad this season, but they took a giant step toward righting the away ship on Wednesday with a 3-2 win at West Brom that was far more comfortable than the scoreline indicated.

Sergio Aguero put City in front after just nine minutes as he continued his red hot form with a finish from 10 yards. A tidy move down the right undid the West Brom defense. and when the ball was dragged back to Aguero, he blasted it into the top of the net for a 1-0 lead.

City did not slow down because they had a goal, either. They continued to press and West Brom had no answer for them as the home side struggled to complete passes through the midfield. Costel Pantilimon was rarely bothered by the Baggies and the Citizens continued to look for a second.

It took until the 24th minute before City finally got their second goal, and it came through Yaya Toure. The Ivorian midfielder had pushed high up the pitch all match and was rewarded when he found the net to double the Citizens’ lead. He would add another goal in the second half when he converted from the penalty spot and it looked like the visitors would ease to a win.

Things got hairy late, when some hilarious play by Pantilimon saw him put the ball in his own net five minutes from time. Victor Anichebe brought West Brom within a goal in stoppage time, but it was too little, too late for the Baggies. City had done the job away from the Etihad and had three points to show for it.

West Brom: Myhill, Reid, Olsson, Ridgewell, McAuley, Yacob, Morrison, Brunt, Amalfitano, Berahino, Long.

Manchester City: Pantilimon, Kompany, Zabaleta, Kolarob, Demichelis, Nasri, Navas, Fernandinho, Toure, Dzeko, Aguero.

Goals: Aguero 9’, Toure 24’, Toure 74’.
